about
The "Cassette Tax" collection of compositions was produced on a pair of samplers, the Boss SP-303 and Roland SP-404 and recorded on a cassette tape 4-track recorder exclusively. The Tascam 414 is an old 4-track cassette tape recorder that was great to use for this project because of the analog inhibitions of its design, and the unique sound that was put down on tape. Basically, I'd improvise some arrangements using instruments like the Yamaha MO6 and Korg EA-1 (along with a bunch of others) and create a series of samples. Instrumentation on the SP-404, and drums/bass on the SP-303. Then - hit record on the tape Tascam and get it all down as a one-shot take!
The finished tracks are meandering simplicity, relatively varied, and to the point. Probably best considered for use with different multimedia projects (film/soundtrack/video) or potentially for any sort of ambiance that they may fit into. A couple of samplers and a tape recorder - most of the time that's all you need to produce with…
