CALE was composed and produced primarily with a lineup of 3 samplers - the Korg KP3+, the Boss SP-303, and the Roland SP-404. Generally speaking, all three samplers were put in-line and used collectively to create and process original drum patterns and music samples. Then with some good samples all squared-away it was all about getting some unique finished tracks arranged with them. Pretty much a more minimal and simplified process, typically sticking to about 4 or 5 samples/pads per song.
CALE was recorded and planned more as a production music collection, geared towards being used in film, video, and multimedia soundtracks. There's a wide range of unique song styles and themes - going from downtempo piano/drum beats to spaced-out synth patterns. There's a bunch of weirdness, but also a lot of cohesiveness as well.
Recorded on the Tascam 2488, in Bellingham, over the course of about 4 months or so.
Some instruments that were key on this collection are the MO6, EA1 and EA2, the trusty DR670, the Yamaha P-120, and then of course sprinklings of Microkorg, and the awesome D2 (when chained to the Axiom 25). Of course like always, CALE was created all hands-on with the awesome boxes and keys and without any computer or software arranging/composing.
