This short collection of beats was all about creating drum samples that sound like they were being filtered through an old tape recorder, but with a good punch. So to do this - rather than actually using a gritty tape recorder (which I still want to experiment with...) I composed 8-bar breaks on the controversial yet fantastic MC-303, ran them through the EQ/processors, and sampled to the SP-303. But the key was to use the SP-303's compressors (vinyl simulator and regular), then chop the breaks into smaller 2 or 4-bar samples. This is actually the only one of the albums that doesn't use the DR-670 drum machine at all. Composing loose musical layers on top of the patterned drums results in 6 diverse beats with unique flavors. 'North' just goes right to the point - and was recorded in about 6 weeks in the late spring of 2009. In my opinion, the combination of the MC-303 and the SP-303 is the epitome of fun production and sampling.
